M C L E V Y ----------- 1999-2006 First Show: 26 Jul, 1999 Last Show: 24 Dec, 2006 Number Shows: 18 Audition Show: none Series Description: James McLevy was a real-life member of the Edinburgh police, becoming a detective in 1833. In his 30-year career, he handled over 2,200 cases, almost always securing a conviction. Drawing on his vast experience with crime and the criminal underclass of Scotland's capitol city, he published a series of extremely popular books in the 1860s. McLevy was one of the first exponents of the crime genre and was a likely influence on the creator of Sherlock Holmes. In July, 1999, the BBC's Radio 4 brought the Edinburgh detective to radio, first as a single 45-minute show and followed by three series of four 45-minute stories each. Hopefully, these will be followed by more! The dramatizations bring to life the Edinburgh of the 1830's and 1840's with McLevy firmly placed in the context of his Leith beat. He is accompanied by his sergeant/sidekick Mulholland. His chief nemesis is one of the most powerful 'madames' of the day, Jean Brash. You can easily imagine the bustling life of a major port and the stories are alive with a most amazing array of characters. The crimes are recognizable today, from the purse snatching and petty thefts to middle class crimes of embezzlement or insurance fraud. David Ashton wrote and produced the shows and played the part of McLevy's superior. Brian Cox played the part of McLevy. You might know him better for his movie acting in films such as "The Bourne Identity", "The Rookie" and "Troy" to name a few. He played the part of Hannibal Lecter in the movie "Manhunter", which Anthony Hopkins would later take over in "Silence of the Lambs". Mulholland is played by Michael Perceval-Maxwell. Jean Brash is played by Siobh'n Redmond. The shows were directed by Patrick Rayner. Log Comments: This log is possible thanks to Roy Moore who sent his list of show titles and dates.
