A R C H O B O L E R P L A Y S ------- ----------- --------- 1939-1940, 1945, 1964 First Show: Mar 25, 1939 Last Show: Dec 26, 1964 Number Shows: 92 Audition Show: none known Series Description: ARCH OBOLER PLAYS was the series title for 3 separate series, a series of 53 shows in 1939 and 1940, a series of 26 shows in 1945 and a series of 13 in 1964. The 1964 series is also known as ARCH OBOLER PRESENTS. All shows were produced and directed by Arch Oboler. The 1939-1940 series aired on the NBC network, sustained, on Saturdays and were heard 10:00 PM EST. The shows ran typically 30 minutes except the show of August 26, 1939, which ran 60 minutes. All the shows in this series were original radio plays written by Arch Oboler, except for the last two, which were adaptations done by him. The 1945 series aired on the Mutual network, again sustained, on Thursdays also at 10:00 PM EST. The shows ran 30 minutes. The 1964 series was syndicated and were all new productions, using many original scripts as well as scripts from previous series. The shows for this series were shorter than those previous, running about 20 minutes. Log Comments: The log consists of five listings, a chronological log of all broad- casts, a chronological log of each series with notes, actor's names and other additional information and an alphabetical listing of all broadcasts. The first and last lists are intended to be used with the three individual series logs. A special thanks goes to Ed Carr, who sent me a listing of titles, dates and other information that provided a starting point for the log. Information from Jerry Haendiges' internet site and the J. David Goldin database (see "References") fills out the rest of the log. Arch Oboler frequently reused scripts. These remakes are identified in the Title column of the individual series logs. When the original use of the script was in one of the plays in one of the 3 individual series logs, it will be identified by number of the show and "NBC" for the NBC series or "MUT" for the Mutual series. Some scripts were first used in LIGHTS OUT. These are identified by "LO" followed by the date. Some of the broadcasts consisted of multiple plays. If a show title was found, it is used followed by individual play titles. If not, only the play titles are given. Chronological Log of all broadcasts: "Net" means "Network", and can be NBC, Mut (for Mutual) or Syn (for syndicated). It is intended to be used along with the three series listing above. Since there were 3 different series, I've used identifiers NBC for the NBC series, MUT for Mutual and SYN for the syndicated shows. Each identifier is followed by show number in the series. There were a number of shows where there were multiple plays presented in the show. If there was a title for the show, it will be given by itself. For plays within a show where a show title appears, an additional line is given for each play. Both show title and play title will be used in the format "show title: play title". If no show title is known, each play will appear on a seaprate line. All titles are listed, even when a title appears more than once. Alternate titles are listed but not identified as such in this list. They are identified in the chronological lists. Leading "The", "A" and "An" are placed at the end of the title. Dates are given as year-month-day for sorting purposes.
