Rockland Lake State Park
Rockland Lake, Rockland County, NY

Geology:

Waters from the northern end of Rockland Lake flow into the East Branch of the Hackensack River flowing north and then east into Swartwout Lake.  The waters then into Congers Lake followed by De Forest Lake.  From here the waters flow south through West Nyack, into a marsh area, under the Palisades Interstate Parkway, down into Lake Tappan and New Jersey.

Rockland Lake was used as a source of ice for New York City.

1958 -- John D. Rockefeller, Jr. sought to get as much land in the area as possible around the lake. Politicking for money he was able to put together a package worth $1.5 million. Then with the gathering of further monies, he was able to acquire more than one thousand acres for the park. (Binnewies, 2001:234-235)
