Representatives of the field group of the Torrey Botanical Society met at the
Red Apple Rest along Rt. 17. From there we drove to the southeastern area of
Sterling Forest around the built-up Eagle Valley vicinity. In a limey influenced
brook area we found in bloom Caulophyllum thalictroides (blue cohosh), Cardamine
pensylvanica (Pennsylvania bittercress), Osmorhiza claytonii (sweet cicely),
Panax trifolius (dwarf ginseng), Saxifraga virginiensis (early saxifrage), and
Viola cucullata (marsh blue violet). Plants not in bloom included Allium
tricoccum (wild leek), Chelone glabra (white turtlehead), Dicentra cucullaria
(Dutchman's breeches), and Sanguinaria canadensis (bloodroot). Also here were
quite a few examples of Adiantum pedatum (maidenhair fern).
We drove a short ways to another location in the Eagle Valley vicinity we found
in bloom, in a brook and swampy area, Anemonella thalictroides (rue anemone),
Cornus florida (flowering dogwood), Cypripedium acaule (pink ladies' slipper),
Euonymus alatus (winged euonymus), Gaylussacia baccata (black huckleberry),
Geranium maculatum (wild geranium), Ranunculus bulbosa (bulbous buttercup),
Ranunculus hispidus var. caricetorium (swamp buttercup), Senecio aureus (golden
ragwort), Tussilago farfara (coltsfoot), Veratrum viride (false hellebore), and
Zizia aurea (golden alexander). The highlight of the many blooms were those of
Saxifraga pensylvanica (swamp saxifrage). Plants not in bloom included Aesculus
glabra (Ohio buckeye), Anemone quinquefolia (wood anemone), Lilium canadense
(Canada lily), and Thalictrum pubescens (tall meadowrue).
The last stop included a walk in the Rifle Range Road area. Plants in bloom
included Aquilegia canadensis (columbine), Chelidonium majus (celandine),
Corydalis flavula (short-spurred corydalis), Fragaria virginiana (wild
strawberry), Galium aparine (cleavers), Potentilla simplex (common cinquefoil),
Scleranthus annuus (knawel), Smilacina racemosa (false Solomon's seal), and
Veronica arvense (corn speedwell). Non-blooming species included Comptonia
peregrina (sweetfern), Rubus odoratus (purple flower raspberry), and Viburnum
lentago (nannyberry viburnum). Ferns included Matteuccia struthiopteris (ostrich
fern) and Osmunda claytoniana (interrupted fern).
