Buckhorn Wildlife Management Area

Directions:

Located on the west side of Route 519 south of Lommasons Glen Road and north of Roxburg.

This is not an easy place to find.  Take US 80 west to exit 12; take Route 521 south through the village of Hope; pick up Route 519 south; you will bypass the town of Belvidere; soon after the intersection with Route 620 look for Foul Rift Road (near green mileage marker 38); the next place to look for is Lommasons Glen Road (on the left); drive 0.3 of a mile more and you will see just one white diamond Wildlife Management Ares sign on the right hand side of the road.  There is a small asphalt pull-in area big enough for just one car.

The WMA is just north of houses #72 (east side) and #77 (west side) on Route 519. 

Geology:

Buckhorn Creeks runs through the property.

Trails:

This is a small linear area.  From the asphalt pull-in area I walked 10 feet south along Route 519 and then turned right to head through the field areas.  The informal trail heads around house #77.  From the house I walked along the edge of the field (planted with strawberries?).  There is a small woods hedge between the fields of corn to the south and strawberries to the north.  There is a lot of hackberry in this hedge along with black walnut.

There is a broad concrete walkway over Buckhorn Creek.  I continued walking between the woods hedge on the left and the field of strawberries on the left.  After a short walk I came to solid woods at the end of the fields.  There is a path through the hedge here that connects the corn and strawberry fields.  There is an extremely rough path that heads into the woods put it peters out very soon.  One could push through, but I was not in the mood for bushwhacking.  Turned around and returned the way I came.
