History:

early 1900s --  Charles Billing, Oceanport’s first mayor 1920-1928, hosted many social events at the Monmouth Park Jockey Club. He had a farmhouse in the northwestern section of the park that has now been razed.

1997  -- the county purchases the property from the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority for $4.5 million. Developing the facility is expected to cost an estimated $5 million to $6 million.  An indoor pool may be included, as well as four soccer fields, three softball/baseball diamonds, an in-line hockey arena, basketball and tennis courts, a playground, open lawn areas, an overlook with a picnic area, and woodlands.

Trails:

The county is exploring the use of a former rail line as a public trail that will lead into Long Branch.
