Directions:
From Millville, take Route 55 south to its end; south on Route 47; pass through the village of Port Elizabeth; 1.4 miles south of the volunteer fire department building in Port Elizabeth turn left onto Route 670; go over the bridge over the Maurice River; follow Route 649 west and then south to Port Norris; turn right onto Main Street, Port Norris; turn left onto High Street; follow this road to the town of Bivalve and park in a parking area at the northeast intersection of High Street and Miller Avenue.
History:
At one time the Port Norris, Bivalve, and Shellpile Area was
called the Oyster Capital of the World. At one time there were 29
processing and shipping plants in the area. Now there is only one
continuously active packing company, Bivalve Packing. Bivalve is
an authentic fishing village. It is also the homebase of the
Delaware Bay Schooner Center.
There is an old African-American church here (but for how long?
-- evidence of a fire inside the building and there are large
holes in the roof and the side of the building).
