Wildlife Refuge near Wayne Avenue Park

History:

1995  --  the state Department of Transportation spends more than $14 million to create this wildlife refuge.  It was in compensation for wetlands destroyed during construction of Route 287.   The town opposed the wetlands and blames them for increased flooding in the area.

Habitats:

marsh off Walker Avenue near the Pompton River; grassy mudflats

Problems:

Lots of ATV damage and lots of litter.

Birds:

ruff, peregrine falcon, bald eagle.

Trails:

a sandy trail
