Skeetkill Marsh and Bellman’s Creek Marsh
Bergen County, NJ

Located east of the Hackensack River opposite Losen Slote.  It extends from the Hackensack River and the New Jersey Turnpike on the west to the Conrail tracks and developments in Ridgefield and Fairview on the east. The southern end of the site is at a narrow point at the creek mouth. The north end of the site is at a cemetery and power substation.


Habitats:

marshland with intruding development.


Restoration:

A 16.3 acre portion of the site is the subject of a restoration project to create open water and mudflat, upland, and enhanced wetland habitats.


PLANTS:

Shrubs:
Sambucus canadensis (common elderberry)
Baccharis halimifolia (groundsel-tree)

Herbs:
Pluchea odorata (marsh-fleabane)
Hibiscus moscheutos (swamp rose mallow)

Sedges:
Eleocharis parvula (dwarf spikerush)
Scirpus sp. (bulrush)

Grasses:
Phragmites australis (giant reed grass) dominant plant
Spartina (saltmarsh cordgrass)
