Lyndhurst Nature Reserve at Richard W. DeKorte Park
3.5 acres


History:

The park wanted to reclaim the 3.5 acre illegally filled "garbage island" here.  

1989  -- Phase I of the development of the Reserve; restoration of a brackish wetland ecosystem along the shore edge. (A sand shelf was built around the entire eastern 2500-foot perimeter of the island.)

1992 --  Phase II; creation of a native, woody upland habitat.


Habitats:

salt-marsh, shrubland, pine/oak woodland, ephemeral pond, two sand beaches.  Opportunity to monitor land reclamation techniques.


Facilities:

wetland and upland habitats, educational facilities via environmental center, stone amphitheater, bird blind and other amenities.


Trails:

There is a self-guided trail.
