CELERY FARM
Franklin Turnpike, Allendale, Bergen County, NJ
Directions:
US 80 west to either exit 63 (via local US 80) or exit 64 (express US 80) for Route 17 north. Route 17 here starts at around 10 miles and you have to travel to an equivalent of a 20.5 mileage marker on Route 17. Get off at the East Allendale West exit, skipping the East exit. Travel less than a mile and turn right onto Cottage Place; in .1 of a mile, at the T-intersection, turn right onto Franklin Turnpike; and in .1 of a mile turn right into the parking area. From here you can walk in a circular/rectangular pattern around the marsh.
History:
The Celery Farm was founded in the 1800s by Henry J. Appert, who cultivated onions and celery on land off an area known as Wolf Lake, formerly Indian grounds. In the 1940s the land was purchased by the New Jersey Conservation Foundation. In 1981 the sixty acres were repurchased for the town through New Jersey's Green Acre funding. Subsequent donations from developers and residents increased the total acreage to just over 100 acres.
Habitats:
woodland, meadows, marsh, swampy areas, a natural spring-fed pond with a surface area of almost an acre.
Trails:
A 1.25 mile nature trail around a central marshy area of way too much purple loosestrife, some giant reed grass, and some cattails. Along the way there are observation platforms set up for bird watching.
The trail on the southern and eastern sides of the marsh are really dominated by alien invasives: multiflora rose primarily, but also Asiatic bittersweet and Japanese barberry. The situation gets better as you go north and into the woodlands in the north.
5/14/01. Saw lots of red wing blackbirds and three yellow warblers.
