Berry’s Creek Marsh
East Rutherford/Lyndhurst,
Bergen County, NJ
Located on the west side of the river, extending from the Lyndhurst Corporate Park, on the west, to the river on the east, and from Route 3 on the north, to the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad (Conrail) on the south, just south of the Jersey City Aqueduct.
The site includes Berry’s Creek (southern portion), Berry’s Creek Canal, and Oritani Marsh.
Habitats:
high and low salt marshlands interspersed with fill
Restoration:
some of the marsh fill is becoming forested

Atriplex patula (orache)
Hibiscus moscheutos (rose mallow) occasional
Pluchea odorata (marsh-fleabane)
Typha sp. (cattail)
Rushes:
Juncus sp. (rush)
Sedges:
Eleocharis sp. (spikerush)
Grasses:
Phragmites australis (giant reed grass)
Spartina alterniflora (salt marsh hay cordgrass)
Spartina patens (salt meadow cordgrass)
Other:
blue-green “alga” (blue-green bacterium)
