Andreas Park
River Road, Teaneck, Bergen County, NJ

Directions:

Route 4 heading west from the George Washington Bridge. Get off at River Road.  Take River Road north; park along Grenville Avenue on the right. 

History: 

1662  --  David Ackerman arrived from Holland. 

c. 1734-1787  --  Old River House built.   Ackerman family homestead and farm for over 200 years.  Known for their sweet peaches and fancy melons. 

c. 1790  --  Devoe-Andreas homestead.

1890-1951  --  Andreas family residence when Frederick Andreas donated the land to become the Maria W. Andreas Memorial Park in honor of his mother.  Frederick served on the Township Council  

c. 1900  --  River Road, formerly an Indian trail, was still dirt as of this time.  Frederick Andreas recalled riding horseback from here to the Dyckman Street ferry on the Hudson River without leaving the trails on the property of William Walter Phelps. 

Trails:

7/29/2006.   My wife Rosemary took pictures and I tagged along.  There are tennis courts here.  The trail heads south past Indian Pond.  There is an entrance opposite Camperdown Avenue.  Trails heads over to a large soccer field that belong to Fairleigh Dickinson University.  There is a lot of porcelain berry.  Took a picture of the Route 4 bridge.  Go under Route 4.  Fairleigh Dickinson University campus.   Patrick L.
