New Milford’s Alfis Tract, is a wooded preserve on the banks of the Hackensack River.


History:

The land was owned by John Alfis, who inherited it from his father.
 

Local resident Diane Cardinali fought the developers who sought to build on a three-acre virgin forest.

2001  -- the area was purchased with NJ Green Acres and Bergen County Open Space funds.


Habitats:

The undeveloped park contains woods, wetlands and approximately ¼ mile of open shoreline.


Facilities:

open for walking, bird watching and fishing.


Trails:

There is a link with a trail along the Hackensack River that begins on the south end of town at Historic New Bridge Landing (Von Steuben House).
