History:
The name Holmdel refera to the Holmes family.
Park opened as part of New Jersey's Tercentenary celebration.
There is a 9-acre living-history farm here that was purchased by the county from Mary Longstreet Holmes Duncan. This can be visited. It has horses, mules, hogs, etc.
Spellman Estate; Holmdel; Completed in 1993, 3 Acres. The Monmouth
Conservation Foundation (MCF) purchased these 3
acres of wooded land on Holmdel-Keyport Road containing a house and garage in
1993. The Foundation acquired the property with a donation from relatives of the
Spellman Estate and a 50-50 Matching Funds Grant from Green Acres. Transfer of
the property to the County Park System as an addition to Holmdel Park took place
in 1996.

Also here is an arboretum in the southwest section of the park in the vicinity of Upper Pond and Lower Pond.
This park draws some of the largest numbers of residents seeking recreation and relaxation. The tennis courts are popular as are the hiking trails through magnificent stands of beech trees, fishing ponds, playgrounds, picnic areas, and the large shelter building with fireplace and snack bar. You can challenge yourself with 32 exercises on the fit trail. You will be amazed by the season-changing beauty of the arboretum. On cold, snowy days, rosy cheeked residents skate, sled and cross country ski across this family park. The Activity Center just north of the main park entrance contains a nature shop and a small animal collection open Monday-Friday. Also here, visit Longstreet Farm described below. The entrance to this 340 acre park is on Longstreet Road in Holmdel.
LONGSTREET FARM
Holmdel
Your trip to Holmdel Park is not complete without visiting the restored 14 room farmhouse, 14 outbuildings and farm animals that make up Longstreet Farm. This window into Monmouth County's past is a working farm where people dressed in 1890's period costumes plow fields, feed animals, cook, clean and explain farm life to you. Ask about guided tours and special programs like Barnyard Adventures for children. Enter this nine-acre farm from Longstreet Road.
Longstreet Farm was among the largest and most prosperous farms in Holmdel. The original 495 acres were assembled in 1806 by Hendrick Longstreet from several farms. During the 1890s, it was owned by his daughter Mary Ann Longstreet who was in her seventies. The farm was managed at that time by Hendrick's great-grandson Jonathan I. Holmes, who was in his twenties.
Jonathan inherited the farm in 1911 from his aunt, Mary Ann Longstreet. The farm remained in the family until it was purchased by Monmouth County in 1967 from Jonathan's daughter and heir, Marry Longstreet Holmes Duncan. The farm opened to the public in 1972.
Arboretum:
The Holmdel Arboretum was established in the fall of 1963 and is administered by the Monmouth County Shade Tree Commission with the cooperation of the Monmouth County Park System at Holmdel Park. The 20 acres contains hundreds of species, cultivars, and varieties of ornamental trees and shrubs. A map at the Arboretum entrance identifies the major plant collections by a color code.
There is a weeping pagoda tree, weeping ginkgo, Cedrus species, dwarf conifers, flowering crab apples, cherries, purple-leaf plums, and cotoneasters.

Here are additional plants found as of May 1975 from the park plant list. Looking at the list, there apparently was a lot of pine barren vegetation and perhaps a boggy area because black spruce is on the list. But it is doubtful that these pine barren species are still around. We are going to check to see if we can find them, but if I were a betting man I would say we will not be successful. Dr. Patrick L. Cooney
