Hackettstown Reservoir
Mt. Olive Township, Morris County, New Jersey
Location:
The Old Mine Road goes down to the Hackettstown Reservoir area. It has been closed off, but there is a little place at which one can pull over. Follow the road down. The road goes right over the Eagle Scout bridge. Here there is a nice waterfall.
History:
prior to January 2002 -- the Boy Scouts elevated Brian Joseph Morris to the rank of Eagle Scout for all of his work within the reservoir area in making environmental ecosystem improvements, including the building of an 18 ft. long bridge over the reservoir spillway; the removal and collection of debris; and the trimming of overgrown brush, weeds and shrubs.
2002 -- 6.5 acres added that are part of the Musconetcong River watershed and adjacent to open space protecting the Hackettstown Reservoir. The Morris Land Conservancy facilitated the donation and conveyed the land to the Township. Morris Land Conservancy salutes Ken Schumann and partners in Newhouse Investing Company for his generous donation.
21-acre purchase, Mt. Olive Twp., transferred to Morris Co. Park Commission; headwaters of Mine Brook which feeds Hackettstown Reservoir and Musconetcong River; connects the County’s Patriots Path trail system with Allamuchy Mt. State Park; funded by Morris Land Conservancy.
Habitats:
wooded, steep and laced with streams.
