BEARFORT MOUNTAIN south
Passaic County, NJ


Directions:

Take the Greenwood Lake Turnpike west to the Warren Turnpike. Parking is east of Upper Green Lake not far west of the intersection of Warren Turnpike and White Road.


Trail:

The Terrace Pond north trail (blue) heads southwest to a gas line and turns west traveling along the line. Then it turns left (southwest) and heads to Terrace Pond.

A circular walk around Terrace Pond can be made. The Terrace Pond Trail heads northwest and intersects with the gas line. Making a horse shoe bend the trail heads southwest to a parking lot off of Clinton Road at Bearfort Waters Lake (P7 parking lot of Pequannock Watershed).

Another hike is to start from the Bearfort Waters Lake parking lot and head southeast along the Terrace Pond South Trail (yellow) passing a southern gas line, then making a horse-shoe bend and heading north to Terrace Pond. Follow the directions above from Terrace Pond to get back to the parking lot at Bearfort Waters Lake.

To Smoothing Iron Pond, Bearfort Mts. (East of Upper Greenwood Lake), NJ, with Dr. Otis Ingebritaen, Mrs. Pettegrove, and others (15 or 17) of Cosmos Hiking Club of Montclair. Left 9:15 from Montclair, via Dr. Ingebritaen's car, arrived at "Murgolo's" near Upper Green Lake at 10:30. After 20 minutes easy hike, parked bags and baggage on a rock terrace on northwest shore of pond. Swam, ate lunch, swam, then left for home by 3:30 or so. Little chance for any extensive botanizing in the area.

Corylus cornuta (beaked hazel) -- two spots, on way in!
Decodon verticillatus (yellow loosestrife)-- along shore (northwest)
Drosera rotundifolia (roundleaf sundew) -- 7/17/1955 blooming along shore (northwest)
Kalmia polifolia (pale laurel) -- along shore (northwest)
Picea mariana (black spruce) -- w/e shore
Polygonum cilinode -- rock ledge, on way in
Rhododendron viscosum (swamp azalea)-- 7/17/55 blooming along shore (northwest)
Sphagnum sp. (sphagnum moss) -- along shore (northwest)
Utricularia vulgaris? (common bladderwort) -- submerged, just off-shore
