Walpack Wildlife Management Area
Route 615 (between mile 3 and mile 4 on green mileage markers), Walpack Township, Sussex County, NJ
388 acres

(For maps see: www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/wmaland.htm)

Destination:

3.5 and 3.7 miles north of Millbrook Village. ?

We approached the area from Millbrook Village.  Went north from here and went over a Flat Brook bridge and turned right (after visiting the area around the bridge) to head farther north.

There is a north and south entrance off Route 615 that both meet at the bridge over Flat Brook.  From there one can drive over the bridge if so desired and go deeper into the interior of the Wildlife Management Area.

Geology:

Part of the Flat Brook Watershed Group that includes High Point State Park, Stokes State Forest, Flat Brook-Roy WMA, Flat Brook-Roy WMA, and Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.  The sub-watersheds include Shimmers Brook, Clove Brook, Big Flat Brook, Flat Brook below Tillman's Brook and Van Campens Brook, and Dunnfield Creek.

History

According to Hine(1985:153-154), at the mouth of Flat Brook with the Delaware River, there was a remarkable whirlpool, the Indian name of which, Wahlpack, meant whirlpool.  Another possible origin is Walpekat, "very deep water."

Wildlife:

cerulean warblers

Trails:

8/14/04.  After visiting the bridge over Flat Brook, we (Rosemary Cooney, Sarah-David Rosenbaum, Ceferino Santana and I) searched around the bridge area at the Walpack Wildlife Management Area. We also visited a field off of Route 615. The weather was pleasant, just a little warm.  Dr. Patrick L. Cooney.
