OLD MINE ROAD
Coppermine area, Flatbrook, and rocky slope approximately 4.5
miles north of Flatbrook
History:
The Old Mine Road was one of the earliest roads in the region skirting the forest along the Delaware River headed up to Kingston (a distance of 100 miles). It began as an old Indian Trail and then was used by fur traders and Dutch settlers. Later the road was used for transporting copper and slate from the mines and quarries in the area.
Houses along the road became virtual forts for settlers during the French and Indian War. It was used by George Washington's soldiers and men such as John Adams and Benjamin Franklin.
mid 19th Century -- part of the Old Mine Road became links in the Underground Railroad.
Unfortunately, when the federal government tried (unsuccessfully) to build a dam at Tock's Island, many of the old homes and structures along the road were demolished.
