History:

Mrs. Faith Fitch Hill donated 10.6 acres in 1981. Mrs. Helen S. Bergen donated 3.5 acres in 1983. The Nature Conservancy purchased a 22.7 acre tract and later a 20.9 acre tract sold at below market value by Anita Wiener.


Habitats:

Zipfelberg Bog is the southernmost acid bog in New York. Hemlock forest, mixed hardwood forest, red maple swamp, streams.

Pinus strobus (white pine)
Tsuga canadensis (eastern hemlock)

Shrubs:
Chamaedaphne calyculata (leatherleaf)

Herbs:
Drosera rotundifolia (round-leaved sundew)
Sarracenia purpurea (purple pitcher plant)
(snakemouth orchid)

Other:
Sphagnum sp. (sphagnum) the mat is 30 feet deep
