The preserve is adjacent to Hither Hills State Park and Hither Woods Preserve.


History:

1988 -- this is a protected aquifer recharge area in the pine barren woodlands. At Suffolk County's request, the area was acquired by the Nature Conservancy.

1989 -- TNC sells the area to the county in February. The land was the first major acquisition in the county's Groundwater Protection Program.

1989 -- park dedicated to Lee Koppelman, the Long Island Regional Planning Board's first executive director since 1965 and a dedicated environmentalist.
