Dutchess Junction Park
Route 9D,
Beacon, Town of Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY
Directions:
From Cold Spring, Putnam County, NY, head north on Route 9D into Dutchess County
and turn left at mile marker 10:21.
Trails:
There is a small jungle gym area here. The immediate area was once used as a
dumping area and one finds typewriters and refrigerators strewn around. There
are a lot of Norway maples in this area. The unblazed trail heading north
descends down to the river. You pass by lots of multiflora rose and Asiatic
bittersweet, go through the tunnel under the railroad tracks and then soon come
to the Hudson River opposite some oil storage tanks just south of Newburgh. You
can the Beacon-Newburgh bridge from here. Also seen is Bannerman's castle on
Pollepel Island. The shore here is covered with bricks (marked with the imprints
A. B. O., Aldrige and Hammond).
If you walk southeast on the path to Route 9D, on the left across the highway is the start of the blue-blazed Notch Trail that heads up to the Fishkill Ridge and then on to Sunset Point.
