With assistance and financial aid from TNC, the northern 567 acres are purchased in 1986 in the first acquisition involving three governments: New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Suffolk County and the Town of East Hampton.

1988 -- the Conservancy acquires the remaining 777 acres at Hither Woods on behalf of Suffolk County. Jointly owned by the State, the County and the Town, both Hither Woods tracts are adjacent to Hither Hills State Park, bringing the entire parkland assemblage to 3,005 acres.
