NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN

Theodore Kazimiroff Boulevard (opposite main entrance of Fordham University),  Bronx, New York

History:

The idea for a Botanical Garden in New York City came from the Torrey Botanical Society. The notion was soon taken up by others.

1887  The father of the Bronx Park system, John Mullaly, published his book New Parks beyond the Harlem  in which he wrote that: "No better place could be selected for a model botanical garden than Bronx Park, and no better use could be made of any of the parks than to make them subserve educational purposes, practical schools of horticulture, zoology, arboriculture, etc. . . ."

1888  -- the Bronx Park (later NYBG and the Bronx Zoo) formed along with many other parks in the movement to create a system of parks in the Bronx.

A fuller history of the Torrey Botanical Society and the New York Botanical Garden can be found on this website: HISTORY OF THE TORREY BOTANICAL SOCIETY

Phil Duckett and I had been docents at the NYBG and were very familiar with the NYBG forest. We knew the hemlocks were dying, of course, but they told us that cork tree and tree of heaven would probably take over from the hemlocks, or perhaps maples. After a long lay-off from visiting the NYBG forest, on May 16, 2000 Phil Duckett and I were surprised to find that the tree that seems to be taking over is Hercules’ club.

Went again the next year.  It seems to be a struggle for dominance between cork tree and Hercules' club.
