One month after the Conrail splitup, July 1999, sees two Conrail GP38-2's resting in Lakehurst, NJ on Conrail's Southern Secondary. Lakehurst is frequently the layover point for SA-31 and SA-35 trains while the crew rests for the return trip east to Browns Yard via NJT's North Jersey Coast Line(Not for long!!!).
At first glance looking like a freight yard, Bay Head was a storage area for NJT maintenance of way equipment. In the summer of '99 many improvements were made on NJT's North Jersey Coast Line, including the application of new ballast, grade crossing improvements, and tie replacements.
In the early morning hours of a December 1998 day, Conrail GP40-2 3374 with another Geep eases over a grade crossing under the protection of a crewmember flagging the crossing. The units had just eased out of a nearby Howell lumber yard after making a delivery.
A Conrail burro crane, accompanied by an ex-Penn Central flat car, rests in Lakehurst, NJ on Conrail's Southern Secondary in August 1998. Webmaster's note: I spotted the crane and flatcar 10/99 sitting on the Royce Running Track in Manville, NJ. The unit was in poor condition with broken windows and graffiti.
NJ Transit GP40PH-2 number 4150 leads an eastbound NJCL train in Sea Girt, NJ on a muggy summer afternoon. The unit is former Kansas City Southern GP40 number 763, which was rebuilt for NJT by Morrison-Knudsen in 1993.
NJT GP40PH-2 4150 with a six car train in tow heads eastbound towards Manasquan River where it will cross over it on Brielle draw bridge. This summer 1998 view is evident by the long train for beachgoers returning home after a day at the Jersey Shore.
Bay Head residents who reside along the infamous loop can't complain about high speed trains soaring in their back yard. NJT F40PH-2CAT 4125 gingerly eases its train around the loop to comply with the 5 MPH speed restriction in the summer of 1999.
Conrail GP38-2 8126 and GP40-2 3374 are easing two boxcars and a centerbeam flat into the Builders General Supply Company on Rt. 37. Note the classic crossbuck in this August 1998 scene.
An NJ Transit F40PH-2CAT leads a train east out of Bay Head in the final sunlight of a September 1999 day.
F40PH-2CAT number 4128 is seen pushing a train east out of Bay Head Yard and into the shack...I mean station, in August of 1999. Note how the unit's paint glistens in the sun following its work at Conrail's Juniata Shops in Pennsylvania.
Conrail GP40-2 3327 is the lone unit doing the work as it makes a delivery in Lakewood, NJ in August of 1999.
NJT F40PH-2CAT prepares to leave Bay Head Yard for a trip east on a cold and windy January 2000 morning. The large object on the right is a sanding tower. When Stephen sent me this photo, he said, "trains and snow go perfect together." I think I'd agree.
It was only a matter of time...Former Conrail GP38-2 is seen freshly repainted into CSX paint as 2745 with PRR 2942 in Lakehurst, NJ on the Southern Secondary on April 21, 2000. A great railroad philosopher predicted this monumental event hours before it happened :) (See the "Southern Secondary" thread in the message board for more info).
