Brief description:
"This early 19th century barn [constructed of local stone] surviving from the rural past of Germantown was expertly converted by Mantle Fielding to a private residence. He retained the principal volume, but cut open the old wood south side, which he infilled with a Colonial two-story colonnade which became the first floor porch and second floor sleeping porch. Small Colonial sash were cut on the ends, while the north side is treated as a more conventional Colonial Revival house. The proportions and the notion of the infill recall the shingle style, but also reflect the proportions of McKim s Germantown Cricket Club.

History, significance, and background:
"This may well be the first barn conversion by an important Philadelphia architect. It marks the growing interest in the vernacular that ultimately creates the Rose Valley style. Fielding goes on to be important as the biographer of American painters. The property was owned by Fielding from 1899 to 1939."
