Brief description:
"This gable fronted, bracketed [stucco] cottage of the mid-19th
century was a conventional, porch fronted suburban house until it
was remodelled by Mantle Fielding in 1893. He came up with the
idea of removing the front porch and replacing it with a three-
story bay that follows the eave line of the roof, supported by a
rectangular bay, surmounting a three sided bay, in turn supported
on a new three-sided entrance porch. Stick and shingle overlays
gave an up-to-date appearance in the 1890's."
History, significance, and background:
"The modernization of an 1860s house in the 1890s suggests the
ongoing success of Germantown. In this instance, a former member
of Furness staff provided the design and the social standing.
The house forms a part of a major line of important houses on
West Walnut Lane."
