• The 1913 caption:
  "St. Barnabas P.E. Church. West Rittenhouse Street, near McCallum. Organized 1904. Valuation of property $16,000."

• Annotation by Louise L. Strawbridge and John E. Jones, Jr.:
  "St. Barnabas was started by a group of white Episcopalians, under the leadership of Dr. Samuel Upjohn, Rector of St. Luke's. whose experience at the Industrial Home for Colored Women on Armat Street had convinced them that an Episcopal church for Negroes was needed in Germantown. In 1904, they bought an unoccupied building adjacent to the Hill School (formerly occupied by Zion Evangelical Church) and Reverend A.A. St. Claire Moore of Jamaica came as Rector. The Reverend E. Sydnor Thomas served from 1907 to 1954. He got his church an organ by writing to Andrew Carnegie, who offered a 'matching grant'; Carnegie and St. Barnabas each contributed $750."
