HOBOKEN TERMINAL
WAITING ROOM RESTORATION PROJECT
CUSTOMER AMENITIES RELOCATED

On Wednesday April 7, and continuing through the fall of 1999, NJ TRANSIT will close the remaining open portion of the Main Waiting Room and relocate customer amenities to other areas of Hoboken Terminal. On the reverse side of this notice (see below) is a map showing areas closed due to construction.

The restoration of the Main Waiting Room is part of NJ TRANSIT's multi-year effort to restore Hoboken Terminal to its original splendor. Once completed, customers can expect to find the waiting room as it was when it was first completed in 1907. This multi-modal terminal was originally constructed by the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Railroad and is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Below is a list of customer impacts and project highlights.

Customer Impacts (Wednesday, April 7th through the fall of 1999)

During the next phase of work, we will completely close off the Main Waiting Room. While the waiting room is closed, customer amenities will be relocated as listed below :

  • The Ticket Office and men's restroom will be relocated outside the terminal to trailers in Lackawanna Plaza

  • The women's rest room will be accessed by walking through Lackawanna Plaza and following directional signs

  • A passenger waiting area will be open for customers and is located adjacent to the NY Waterway Ferry Terminal

  • The slot box for Mail-Tik payments will not be available to customers while the Main Waiting Room is closed. Customers can mail their Mail-Tik payments in the U.S. Mailbox located at Track 5. Postage is required.

Project Highlights

  • Restoring the stained-glass Tiffany skylight, the copper window frames and window panes

  • Replacing the terrazzo floor, the original newsstand on the west wall and the historic clock

  • Refinishing the wooden benches

  • Repairing and repainting the plaster and limestone walls

  • Installing four large pendant chandeliers that originally hung from the ceiling

NJ TRANSIT thanks you for your patience and cooperation while the Main Waiting Room is being restored. While work is in progress, we will do everything possible to minimize the impact.
