OPERATING CONTROLS
INTRODUCTION
Most all of the operating devices, manual and visual, normally used by the locomotive operator during locomotive operation are located near the operator's position. These devices are located either on the master controller, on the air brake stand, or on the engine control panel. See Fig. 1 on Page 6
NOTE : Operating controls for the Auxiliary Power System are located on the back wall of the operator's cab to the right of the engine control panel.
CONTROL CONSOLE
The control console at the operator's position is the mounting stand for the various operating controls, instruments, circuit breaker, and switches most frequently used by the engineman.
MASTER CONTROLLER
The master controller is a set-up switch located in the center of the control console, and is used by the operator to control the locomotive. It has a throttle handle and a reverse handle.
Throttle Handle
The throttle handle has an IDLE position and eight notches.
Freight Operation - When the engine is running and the throttle is in IDLE position, the engine runs at 450 rpm. When the handle is advanced to any throttle notch position beyond IDLE, the engine accelerates to full engine speed of 960 rpm.
