HOBOKEN TERMINAL
PASSENGER CONCOURSE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT UPDATE - May 1997


PHASE 1

Reconstruction of Storefronts and Construction of a New Food Court and Customer Service Office
Time Frame : Currently in progress, with completion scheduled during 1997.

A new Food Court is being constructed and will consist of the Railhead Bar, Peter's Deli and four new vendors. The vendors will serve a variety of products to improve the diversity of items available for customers using the terminal.

At the same time, the plywood shingle storefronts, added in the 1970's along the south portion of the Passenger Concourse, were demolished and replaced with materials conpatible to the historic character of the terminal.

  • New storefronts were constructed along the Passenger Concourse.

  • Most of the work on the new Food Court is nearing completion. Some of this work included the upgrading of electric, plumbing, heat ventialtion and air conditioning systems.

  • As the new spaces are completed, vendors will customize their own loaction to suit their needs before moving into the Food Court. We anticipate these vendors will open in their new locations later this year.

  • Several exterior windows were added to allow more natural light into the Food Court.

  • The fruit and begetable stand returned to its original location with new facilities and lighting.

  • A new Customer Service Office and Rail Operations Control Center were built at the far end of the Passenger Concourse near the NY Waterway Ferry Terminal across from Track 14.

PHASE 2

Waiting Room Doors and Vestibule Restoration
Time Frame : To be determined after the project contractor is selected.

Restore the west wall of the Waiting Room and recreate the original newsstand dating from 1907.

  • Erect barriers and scaffolding to contain the work area.

  • Demolish vestibules, newsstand and current Rail Operations Control Center.

  • Reconstruct the original newsstand.

  • Reconstruct doorways and install new doors.

PHASE 3

Waiting Room Ceiling and Skylight Restoration
Time Frame : To be determined after the project contractor is selected.

Restore the stained glass skylight and renovate the walls, ceiling, stone masonry, copper windows and overhead lighting in the Waiting Room.

  • Erect barriers and scaffolding to contain the work area. Portions of the Waiting Room will be barricaded throughout this phase.

  • Restore and clean the stained glass skylight and copper windows.

  • Restore the handrails, landings and worn steps on the Grand Staircase.

  • Clean the stone masonry molding on the Grand Staircase.

  • Repair and paint plaster and woodwork on the walls and ceiling.
