PA-4 TRANSIT CARS
The Next Generation

PATH's 95 brand-new transit cars -- the PA-4s -- were designed by Port Authority engineers and built specially for PATH by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. They feature the latest in transportation technology.

The car body is made of stainless steel, which provides for a strong, light-weight structure. It also presents a pleasing appearance and allows for easy cleaning.

Most major components, such as propulsion, friction brake and air conditioning systems, are designed to be compatible with PATH's existing PA-series fleet and are manufactured by suppliers in the United States. The cars themselves are being completely assembled at a plant at the Port Authority's Yonkers Industrial Park.

There are many innovative, patron-oriented features. External public address speakers now make it possible for passengers on station platforms, as well as inside the cars, to hear announcements made by conductors. Each car has six passenger-to-crew alert devices located in convenient areas : simply by pressing a yellow strip switch, patrons can signal the train crew and PATH personnel on station platforms when there is a problem on the car in which they're riding. Each car also is equipped with an emergency closet containing portable ladders for evacuation should a problem develop between stations.

PATH ridership. is continually increasing -- 260,000 patrons will be traveling every day by the end of the century. To accommodate traffic growth, modifications were made to car design : the number of doors on each car were increased for easier loading and unloading; the seating was changed to an all-longitudinal design to give patrons more room; and more floor-to-ceiling stanchions and overhead grab bars were installed.
