  • All NJDOT equipment became property of NJ TRANSIT as of January 1, 1983
  • In roster, units acquired by NJDOT from CR on 12/2/76 (GP40P, U34CH, SW9, E8, GG1, RDC, GP7) do not indicate ownership by Conrail, unless there was a repainting or renumbering.
  • F7s leased by NJ TRANSIT from C&NW April 1983, arrived May 1983. All units except 423 & 425 purchased by NJT.
  • The GP40Ps were financed by a subsidiary of C&O and were leased to NJDOT for the bankrupt CNJ and came lettered for CNJ in B&O/C&O style blue paint and yellow lettering with numbers compatible with the B&O/C&O who were operating the CNJ at the time of delivery. Acquired by NJDOT from Conrail on 12/2/76.
  • NJ TRANSIT GP40Ps 4100-4112 were equipped with Steam Generators until they were equipped with HEP in 1983-1985 (re-designated GP40PHs). Rebuilt by Conrail's JLS as GP40PH-2s in 1991-1992.
  • NJ TRANSIT F40PH-2s 4113-4129 redesignated F40PH-2CAT upon receiving Caterpillar HEP equipment from Conrail's Juniata Locomotive Shops 1996-1997. Conversion involves a comprehensive overhaul and stretching of the frame and carbody to accomodate HEP generator set.
  • METRO NORTH F40PH-2CATs 4191-4192 are former Amtrak F40PHs redesignated F40PH-2CAT upon receiving Caterpillar HEP equipment from Norfolk Southern's Juniata Locomotive Shops 1999. Conversion involves a comprehensive overhaul and stretching of the frame and carbody to accomodate HEP generator set.
  • NJ TRANSIT GP40FH-2s 4130-4144 and METRO-NORTH 4184-4189 rebuilt using F45 cowls and GP40 locomotives by Morrison-Knudsen 1987-1989.
  • GP40PH-2s 4145-4150 rebuilt from GP40s by Morrison Knudsen February-May 1993.
  • The following U34CHs were painted into NJT disco-stripe scheme : 4154, 4157, 4158, 4160, 4164, 4167, 4176, 4178. All others remained in a modified NJ DOT scheme.
  • Metro North 4183 was built as a U30C (C&NW 934) in 2/68, was sold to the MTA and rebuilt at GE/Pittsburgh in August to October 1978 to U34CH specs.
  • GP40PH-2Bs 4200-4218 rebuilt from Conrail GP40s at CR's Juniata Locomotive Shop 1994-1995.
  • NJT 4219 is former NJT GP40PH-2 4148, which was wrecked in a head-on collision in February 1996. Conrail's Juniata Locomotive Shop rebuilt 4148, and upgraded it to GP40PH-2B specifications.
  • GP40-2s 4300-4303 rebuilt from Conrail GP40s at CR's Juniata Locomotive Shop in 1995. Units are NOT equipped with HEP.
  • E44s acquired by NJ TRANSIT from Conrail 1/1/83.
  • RDCs 5196-5199 acquired by CNJ from NYS&W April 1956.
  • RDC's 5180, 5185 - 5189, 5190, 5196 leased to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in late 1980s.
