FIREARMS SAFETY This course is the starting point for students aged 16+ years who wish to obtain a Firearms Licence or who wish to follow a firearms related career. Having a firearms licence is a compulsory requirement before a person can own, use or work with, or on, firearms, or parts of firearms. On satisfactory completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of arms legislation and of the construction, operation, safety and security requirements for firearms and ammunition. They will be able to sit the Police Firearms Test, a mandatory requirement towards obtaining a Firearms Licence. The course will progress students’ learning towards obtaining a Firearms Licence and unit 9131, but not to completion. Students will receive a record of the outcome of the Police Firearms Test and of the unit elements completed. There are no lower level Firearms Safety units on the NQF.
