An Unknown Artist
6 Drawings from the Battlefield Sketchbook of Georges Victor-Hugo
These drawings were taken from the battlefield sketchbook of second-lieutenant of infantry Georges Victor-Hugo, grandson of the famous French author. A reporter from 'L'Illustration' chanced upon this 'unknown artist' while touring the Champagne battlefields in 1916 and persuaded the gallant but otherwise modest soldier to allow publication of several of his sketches in the 1916 Christmas issue of 'Illustration'. A dozen were chosen from more than one hundred drawings, all made on the scene during various offensives and battles.
