From a French Magazine

From 'Le Miroir' issue 69, March 21 1915

After a court-martial a German spy is marched to an execution field near Nancy.

A French priest-soldier (not the same as a chaplin)
shakes the condemmed man's hand (not the same as giving Absolution or a blessing either)

Afterwards, the troops are marched passed the body of the blindfolded corpse.

Here is a rather grisly and gloating series of photos of the execution of a captured German 'spy', published in one of the leading French newsmagazines as a two page center-spread. According to the caption, the condemmed man was a German soldier captured in farmer's garb nearby Nancy. He was far too close to an encampment and was paying too much attention to military matters and so came under suspicion. Condemmed by what one suspects to be a rather summary court-martial, he was sentenced to death, which was carried out in front of a review of French troops, ostensibly to strengthen their resolve and patriotism.
