Much was made of 'the Wiener Illustrierte Zeitung' publishing an illustration that was an almost exact copy of Matania's above painting of fleeing Austrian troops, but instead subsituting fleeing Russian soldiers in a slightly different landscape with different captions. Both during and after the war, this instance of artistic laziness was made out to be yet another proof of Teutonic arrogance, as if adding a copyright violation to alledged German war crimes proved the point.
