A city block almost completely destroyed during the German bombardment.

Much was made of this destruction propaganda-wise, though in fact the Germans

were aiming for Belgian military headquarters, a building several dozens of yards

across the street and a legitimate military target (see white arrow).

After the war, Belgium's first skyscraperwas built on this site.
