Thompson set sail for Russia in late 1916 and arrived in Petrograd in February 1917, accompanied by 'Leslie's Magazine' staffer Florence Harper. This was to be his second visit to the Eastern Front. The following photos are taken from the book 'Donald Thompson in Russia' which was published in 1918, after his return to the USA. The book contains many fine photographs, a number of which still regularly appear in modern historical publications. The text is composed almost exclusively of letters which Thompson wrote home to his wife Dottie.
