Uruguayan illustrator for a top French Sunday supplement
Eugène Damblans
1865 - 1945

Illustrator of the 'Grande Geste'

where does an artist find his inspiration?

left - London girls on a recruiting drive
right - a photograph of the original event

Notice how Damblans changed the girl's clothes from white into a more colorful appearance
and how he has given them individual outfits, perhaps as is befitting a fashion magazine.
He also changed the Union Jack in the photo into a British Ensign in his illustration,
thereby allowing for a large swathe of red color, making it more eye-catching and striking.
