'Milwaukee Germania-Herald'
a German-language American Magazine
several covers from 1915
There were quite a number of German publications for the large German-speaking community in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. 'Deutsch-Amerika' was one of the better known magazines but there were others such as 'Wachter und Anzeiger', 'Illinois Staats-Zeitung', 'Demokrat', 'Freie Presse', 'Lokal Anzeiger', and the 'Milwaukee Germania-Herald' that incorporated material from this parent publication.
The German publications in the Untited States during the Great War offered a varied array of original and distinguishing photographic material. Much is made of the conflict on the Eastern Front, which avoiding offending mainstream American senibilities about the war in the west, in France and especially in Belgium. By 1917 German-language publications in the United States had to play a delicate balancing act. On the one hand they needed to profess their loyalty to the United States and its war aims. On the other hand, ancestral loyalties to the Fatherland were difficult to ignore.
Here are a few examples of cover- and inside pages from 1915 issues of the 'Milwaukee Germania-Herald'.
