War-Time Almanachs

Almanach Populaire 1916

outer and inner cover pages

By the time the 1916 Almanachs were set to print, publishers had had enough lead time to include special features pertaining specifficlly to the war. French magazines and publications of all kinds, almanachs certainly amongst them, were especially prone to displays of grand patriotic sentiments. In this 1916 edition the editors have included a morally uplifting and hopefully inspiring little allegory of the making of a French soldier. Called up to arms in January, he progresses further every month until by the end of the year he is a full-blown hero. Such little morality plays as it were, were illustrated in a charming but very naive manner. The follwoing instance was moreover printed in color.

Other pages were replete with scenes of war and French heroism and pluck.

January : Called to Arms
February : Getting Outfitted

March : the Rigors of Barracks Life
April : Marching off to War
