Actually entitled 'History of the Great War based on official documents by direction of the Historical Section of the Committee of Imperial Defence'. Published by HMSO in the 1920-30's. Original volumes very sought-after and expensive. IWM and PRO hold copies, as do larger libraries. Some recent facsimile editions. Extensive work, multiple volumes, very detailed. Covers military operations, logistics, etc. in all theatres.
Published in 1921 with facsimile copies since. In 80 parts plus a separate volume for officers. Each volume deals with individual Regiment or Corps, and lists those who died, giving dates, locations, army number. Not 100% accurate, but an excellent record. ISBN 1 871505 01 1 to 1 871505 80 1. Obtainable from IWM (see above).
Over 200 volumes, covering all cemeteries and memorials to the missing which are maintained by CWGC (see above). Copy located at each CWGC office, and at each cemetery. Also in some larger libraries. Lists all those commemorated, with dates, units, etc.
Brig. E.A.James. Now reprinted as British Regiments 1914-18. Published again in 1978 by Samson Books, ISBN 0 906304 03 2. Gives potted history of every battalion, with dates, locations.

COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION
The Commission is responsible for the maintenance of the cemeteries containing the graves of British and Commonwealth soldiers killed during the two World Wars. It maintains war monuments built to the memory of those who have no known grave, and preserves records and registers.
