WMUR-TV Celebrates 50 Years of service to New Hampshire
WMUR-TV, owned by Francis P Murphy, brought televison to New Hampshire and northeastern
Massachusetts; Lowell, Boston and Worcester, as a primary ABC affiliate.
Boston had only two VHF stations: WBZ-TV an NBC affiliate,
WNAC-TV being CBS.  WMUR-TV provided the Boston market with
ABC and secondary DuMont  service.

Some of WMUR-TV's local programs had a large "Boston" following,
notably the Clyde Joy and Willie Mae  Circle Nine Ranch.
The original post-war assignments were CH 1 for Manchester , CH 9 for Boston.
After the FCC lifted the "Freeze" on new applications for television licenses, The Radio Voice of
New Hampshire (WMUR) applied for CH 9, 59 KW visual, and 29.6 aural in mid June 1952.
The Voice and Vision of New Hampshire went on the air at 4 pm on Sunday March 28,1954, from studios at
1819 Elm St, Manchester. Space formerly occupied by the WMUR (AM) studios, that by now had been relocated
to the transmitter site on the west side of Manchester. The TV transmitter is located on Mount Uncanoonuc
in Goffstown, the building that once housed WMUR-FM. For a six month period, with the antenna being
1,030 ft. above average terrain, channel 9 had the highest transmitter site in New England.
