Major Edwin H. Armstrong -- the Father of FM
December 18, 1890 - January 31, 1954

There are two wonderful books that chronicle Major Armstrong's career.
"Man of High Fidelity", out of print, but can be found on eBay and "Empire of the Air".
Ken Burns television program, Empire of the Air, as well as a companion book are available from PBS.

Appears to be Bell Labs W3XN, formerly W3XPY, Whippany, NJ.
(The Bell System had three major components; Bell Labs for research and engineering, 
Western Electric was manufacturing, while AT&T and the "baby bells" were the operating partners)
