Camp Pahaquarra Near Tocks Island
Note especially Tocks Island to the northwest of Camp Pahaquarra. Around 1970, the federal government planned to build a dam in this area for flood control, called the Tocks Island Dam. The government purchased the land along the Delaware in order to create a huge reservoir. At this time, the George Washington Council decided to close Camp Pahaquarra and replace it with Yards Creek Scout Reservation, near Blairstown, NJ. After many years of determined opposition by the local residents, the government finally decided to not build the dam. The land owned by the government, along the Delaware River, is now part of the National Park System.
