PROJECT OVERVIEW
A 4,510' cable-stayed, twin tower, bridge project. The bridge spans
the Ohio River and Indiana 66 near Rockport, Indiana, and Owensboro,
Kentucky (US 231). The bridge will have two main towers, each 345 feet
above the surface of the river. It will be 4,500 feet long with four
12-foot-wide traffic lanes.
The Kentucky Transportation board will over see the
project. The contractor is Traylor
Brothers Inc. who bid the job at $55.5 million dollars. This
cable-stayed bridge is one of only about twenty in the United States. UPDATE
April 15, 2000 This project is now
scheduled to be done summer 2002 after taking into account weather and
other delays. The projects is expected to come in under
budget. Due to some technological advances in bridge building the
cost of the bridge is now expected to be $54 million a savings of over $1
million. Some interesting notes on this bridge:
To keep the concrete from cracking, ice was brought in by trailer loads
to mix with the concrete, and cold river water was pumped through pipes
inside.
“Concrete this thick heats up,” Owens said. “If the outside and
the center cool at different rates, you get cracks. When they built
Boulder Dam, they pumped cold water in pipes the same way.”
In the winter, electric heaters and tents were used to keep the
temperature around the concrete headers at around 45 degrees.

September 28, 1999 The project has
reached the halfway point and should be complete by the end of 2000.
