PROJECT OVERVIEW:
After 72 years a new $200 million dollar twin-tower suspension bridge will
replace the original Carquinez Bridge in the San Francisco Bay area.
Construction on the new project is expected to be completed late 2003.
The structure will be built on the west side of the existing bridge.
While the west-bound existing bridge will be dismantled, the east-bound
structure will receive a $70 million dollar renovation. "It
should be interesting for commuters, they'll be able to watch the new
bridge being built." said Caltrans spokesman Colin Jones. Check this page for more current news as the project progresses.
PROJECT UPDATES: 6-18-2002
The new Carquinez Bridge started looking like a suspension bridge
Monday after workers shut down the strait and strung up the first of many
temporary cables.
The 14 cables, which will follow the same geometry as the permanent
main cables, will act as two foot bridges. Each foot bridge will consist
of seven cables: four operating as the walkway, two as handrails and one
as a wench line.
