PROJECT OVERVIEW
In 1959 the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority appointed Othmar Ammann
to design the colossal Verrazzano Narrows Bridge. At this time in
history it would be the longest span in the world. The cost of $325
million was highest ever for a bridge project. This project was to
be paid for out of public funds and then recovered through car
tolls. The towers soared 650 feet above the water, while the
double-deck roadway was suspended 226 feet high. The main span stretched
4260 feet between towers. These distances are so high and far
apart that in designing the bridge it was necessary to take into account
the curvature of the earth. The total height of the towers is 693
feet and with the towers 4260 feet apart the top of the towers are 1
5/8" further apart due to the curvature of the earth. On November 21, 1964 the
Verrazzano Narrows Bridge opened and held the claim as the longest suspension
bridge in the world.
