IRON MIKE MEMORIAL

Iron Mike is a new memorial to the American Airborne forces which dropped around St Mere Eglise on D Day. La Fičre was taken by the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) who defended the causeway below the memorial from German attacks over the next few days. This included attacks by German armour, until one paratrooper set up his bazooka on the bridge and knocked the lead tank out. For this he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour.
There are memorials here to the PIR units involved in the fighting here, and a large orientation table overlooking the action, the base of which is a large bronze parachute.
